Prodigal One
Project type
Short Film
Prodigal One is a retelling of the Lost Son Parable that Jesus tells in the Gospel of Luke Chapter 15. The story here is set in the South of the United States just toward the end of the Dust Bowl era of the Great Depression. It is a direct reflection of the current spiritual depression within present day America.
The significance of this setting is a reflection not only of the actual parable in Luke 15:14, but more of the current spiritual depression within America. While we live in a land of abundance and ease in 2025, we are a culture and society that is in spiritual decline and rapidly moving toward postmodernism. The Famine we have is one not of physical crops, but of spiritual harvest.
We need revival. We need to return to God. We are the Prodigal One, just as are those who have heard the Gospel and ignore it or those who may have experienced the goodness of God and yet somehow have forgotten or compromised to the point of an almost nonexistent “lukewarm” faith. We are in the pig pen, rolling in the muck, beaten and bruised, and in need of being washed clean by the living water of the River of Life.
The idea behind this short film is to create a story that is not simply a powerful and symbolic retelling of Jesus’ own timeless tale, but images and music that move hearts to know what is already written upon them, the need for a Father, the unending love that is Agape, Truth, and Home.
